When to seek help for autism

Signs it may be time to talk to someone

  • Delayed speech or loss of words
  • Limited eye contact or response to their name
  • Repetitive movements or strong need for routine
  • Intense focus on specific interests
  • Sensitivity to sounds, textures or lights

A formal autism diagnosis requires assessment by a qualified clinical psychologist, developmental paediatrician or psychiatrist. Screening results come with a referral to the right specialist, and speech, occupational or behavioural therapies are arranged through them.
